An Integrative Approach to Revising Policies and Procedures to Comply with Title IX
A new client, a community college system needed to revise six existing policies and procedures while implementing a comprehensive approach to addressing not just the 2020 Title IX regulations, but all forms of protected-class discrimination, in a unified process. Working from TNG’s innovative 1P2P model template, and incorporating needed changes to student, employee, and faculty handbooks as well as grievance processes, a TNG partner worked with six administrators via Zoom calls and had the completed drafts ready for the client after eight hours of efficient collaboration. The client is satisfied, compliant, and in the process of implementation.
The Heckler’s Veto - Training Front Line Personnel on First Amendment Rights
After several clashes between University Police and students over demonstrations and a controversial speaker on campus, a large public university determined that front-lines personnel needed a better understanding of free speech rights, thresholds for intervention, liability risks, and ways to manage protests and counter-protests more effectively. They had trouble finding a consultant with this expertise, and then another college recommended TNG. We worked with the university to devise a set of trainings for different front-line groups, including faculty, law enforcement, residence life personnel, and student activities/involvement staff to ensure they knew boundaries and capacities. TNG used a very effective case study model, rather than a legalistic discussion, to illustrate the key points to help the various groups navigate these sophisticated and complex issues.
Training a Whole University System in Three Months
A system of state universities, a repeat client, had a need for comprehensive Title IX training for its Title IX Coordinators, Deputy Coordinators, Investigators, Hearing Officers, and Advisors. They needed one source for all content and could find no other provider that was able to meet their needs on their timeline. TNG created a custom training package with advantageous pricing to ensure that all training needs, recording needs, and materials needs were met for the client within a three-month time period.
Department-Wide Investigation Helps College to Change Culture
A small university faced dozens of allegations of inappropriate sexual relationships in an academic department. The university commissioned TNG, which immediately assigned two partner-level investigators and two associate-level investigators. TNG designed a three-part roadmap to serve the client. Step one engaged TNG to assess the breadth of the potential misconduct and report to the Board of Trustees. Once the client had a sense of the scope of the problem, TNG was commissioned to investigate each claim thoroughly. Finally, TNG is assessing the long-term effectiveness of the university’s interventions and serving as consultants to help the university shift the culture of the department toward healthier relational norms.
Crisis Communications Turn Around a Hot-Button Situation
A long-term client was suddenly facing online anonymous allegations of cover-up and mishandling of serious sex offenses by students. The Title IX Coordinator was facing public condemnation, the president was taking heat, and local media had picked up the story. The college’s vice president for administration and its media relations coordinator reached out to TNG for a quick tutorial on FERPA, to be clear on what they could say and what they could not. In the course of the phone conversation, it became clear to the consultant that the strategy the college was using was too defensive. The partner offered a different approach to consider, and thereafter TNG was engaged to partner with the college on a collaborative communication strategy that helped to turn the adverse publicity around and eventually quelled it.
