Brett A. Sokolow, J.D.
"If you see something that is not right, not fair, not just, you have a moral obligation to do something about it." John Lewis
Brett A. Sokolow is recognized for his national leadership on systems-level solutions for safer schools and campuses and is widely considered one of the foremost experts on Title IX and civil rights in the nation.
With more than 25 years in the field, Sokolow has consistently innovated in his roles at TNG and its two industry associations, the Association of Title IX Administrators (ATIXA) and the National Association for Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment (NABITA). Equity is more than a professional interest for Sokolow; it is a passionately held value system to which he has dedicated his career. In 2000, he founded TNG with the mission of impacting civil rights law to enact a positive change in the field of education.
He currently chairs the boards of TNG and ATIXA. ATIXA has more than 19,000 members and has provided more than 73,000 certifications to Title IX, ADA/504, Title VI, and Title VII professionals across the US since 2012. Since June 2017, Sokolow has also led TNG’s West Coast practice group in Los Angeles, California. Sokolow founded and oversees the firm’s investigations, external decision-making, and policy review services for K-12 and higher education clients. In addition to consulting for schools and colleges, Sokolow has contributed as an expert witness in more than 115 significant federal and state lawsuits affecting college, university, and school liability. He also leads the firm’s efforts to shape and address federal and state policy related to school and campus safety, violence prevention, and non-discrimination. In addition to his work on sex discrimination, civil rights, and promoting campus safety, he has extensive expertise in campus conduct training and authoring codes of conduct. He has trained conduct administrators from more than 1,000 college campuses. Sokolow has served as an interim Title IX Coordinator and an interim Title IX Case Manager for clients in various educational settings.
In 2009, he founded NABITA, serving as the Executive Director until 2015 and as Board Chair until 2022. With TNG Managing Partner, W. Scott Lewis, Sokolow pioneered the NABITA model for campus Behavioral Intervention Teams (BITs). He co-developed the NABITA Threat Assessment Tool, one of the most widely used campus risk assessment rubrics, and co-authored The Book on BIT by NABITA.
In 2025, as TNG marked its 25th anniversary, Sokolow took on the additional role of Chief Resolution Officer of The FAIR Center, reinforcing its mission to ensure just outcomes for every discrimination complaint.
Sokolow has been interviewed on CNN and featured in numerous media outlets, including Newsweek, Time Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, ABC News, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Education, Ed Dive, District Administration, USA Today, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe. He has applied his expertise in various student affairs, preventative law, and risk management topics to more than 250 articles, 25 books, and peer-reviewed journal publications. He also served as Editor of the Report on Campus Safety and Student Development by the Civic Research Institute, where he was a member of the Editorial Advisory Board. He previously held the role of Legal Issues Editor for the CLHE Student Affairs Law & Policy Weekly.
Sokolow holds a J.D. from Villanova University School of Law and a B.A. in East Asian Studies from the College of William & Mary.
Sokolow lives in Southern California with his wife and two children, though he was born and raised in Philadelphia and New Jersey. After moving to California, he attempted to become a vegan but has only unlocked Seagan status so far. He suffers from occasional bacon-related relapses. He compensates for this weakness with regular Pilates and diligent compliance with the statewide Necktie Abolition Act. He enjoys hiking, pickleball, and escape rooms. His colleagues think that the ATIXA listserv is his third child, but he considers the listserv to be far needier than his biological offspring.
